Where’s Worcestershire?

I'm old enough to remember when Sheerness had a big free car-park which attracted visitors to the beach. Then a big supermarket took over the plot and made it customers only, so the visitors couldn't find anywhere to park, and of course that lack of footfall and the supermarket clobbered the shops. There was a time when it had the reputation for having the highest percentage of unmarried teenage, and underage, mothers, but I don't know if that was true.

I am moving to West Shore Park on Walney Island. Looks ok to me.

Why am I not surprised that St. Austell comes top of this list. I spent a few days there a couple of years ago and was gobsmacked to witness such squalor. When you walk into Wetherspoons there your feet actually stick to the floor, although that could be said of almost anywhere. I've never been tempted to use heroin but if I lived there I think I might.

Ristol used to be such a great place full if great shops niw lits full of empty buildings flats for studends even our beloved gakkeries are being clised to accomodate even motre student living, then youve got the affluent end called cabot circus full of shops the ordinary oeople cant afford to shop in lots of f homelessness also beggars sitting unde cashpoints and at supermarket doors drugs are rife so are stabbings this once beautiful city is now a cesspit sadly

Chatham high street is full of junkies, homeless, immigrants and feral kids. Terrible place. Gets worse every year.

If you judge UK towns by their high streets, the majority are going to score low on your ratings. It's a problem with so many towns. Gillingham and Chatham high streets ARE bad. When I was a child they were both really nice, but like many modern high streets have suffered from out of town shopping, expensive parking, poverty, cheap shops, unemployed, drunks, drug addicts, and immigrants with not much to do. But both towns, again like most UK towns, have really nice parts when you get away from the high street. Gillingham has Darland, Hempstead, Wigmore, and parts of Rainham; Chatham has St Mary's Island, and Dockside. The former industrial riverfront from Chatham to Gillingham.is being redeveloped, and is decent. Huge numbers of Londoners have moved to the Medway Towns last few years, realising it's cheaper to live here and commute than buy in London. You just have to choose your area. One other statistic about Gillingham, it has one of the lowest annual rainfalls of the entire UK! (If not on the day you visited). Medway Valley being protected by a lot of the worst weather. I don't say Chatham and Gillingham are fantastic. But you have to know the history before you can do a serious critique. These towns were not built to be attractive - they were functional, to support the military/naval dockyard and it's industry, plus all the accommodation for the military and dockyard workers. It was a military industrial area. When the dockyard was closed in the 1980s, it led to decades of unemployment, and though the towns are improving, they have still never fully recovered. They are not pretty, because they served a military and industrial purpose. Not every town was built to look nice! Another thing is that Medway Council over the last few decades have put most money into Rochester, which is a nice place and is seen by the Council as 'the jewel in the crown' of the Medway Towns. So Chatham and Gillingham have not had the investment. To show I can laugh at my home town, some years ago Brighton ground shared with Gillingham FC. Their fans had to walk from the train station along Balmoral Road, which you showed in your video. Probably one of the roughest, or roughest looking, parts of Gillingham. A Brighton fanzine said "if Kent is the garden of England, Gillingham must be the compost heap!" Some got really annoyed at that, I found it funny. Again, you have to know why it is the way it is, in some places. Then I made friends with someone not from the area, who lived here for many years, then moved away. On a visit back, he said "I like Medway". Surprised, I asked "really? Why's that?" He said "there's an honesty here. People don't think the area is better than it is". And that summed it up - we know parts of Medway are rough, and we don't think they are the greatest. Finally, when you do your videos, you need to get your pronouniations right. I speak just like you, but have been a professional presenter in my career. I have to clip and 'clean up' my Chatham-Gillingham English when I present online. For example, you need to pronounce your 'th'. So many presenters on UA-cam do the same. Hearing you say "Free hundred and firty eight fousand" made me wince, same as dropping the g off words, like "livin". I'm not expecting a Joanna Lumley level of received pronunciation! Down the pub I use Fs at times, instead of Th. But this video is in the public domain, and it just sounds unprofessional. For all those 'F's, and for committing the sin of calling the Medway the Thames, and for only judging a town from its high street, I can't give this video a like. But I might just watch another of yours! 😉 Up The Gills!

A lot of these coastal towns are totally different in the Summer. They are seasonal areas.

I worked in many of these towns and one thing they all have in common is, they are full of immigrant’s. Fact They had a massive gas explosion in rams gate- it done half of a million pounds of improvements!!

I was brought up in Dartford in the 1960s and it was a very nice market town. A really nice place to live. I moved out long ago and when I go back to visit I find it is worse and worse. Horrendous traffic, run down shops and endless new build blocks of flats with no amenities.

Blackpool must be the biggest turdtown, cesspool more like.😮

Yes. Every deprived area that believed the Tory lies and voted for Brexit made a mistake. The reason, as you point out, is that the EU had hard and fast rules, based on need, for handing out money to such areas. The Tories, stand in a garden in Cheltenham and proudly boast they've diverted funds from deprived areas to affluent ones full of well off Tory voters. The levelling up money being directed to Tory voting areas also tells its own story.
